The application process was given a complete re-vamp in 2004, with some minor modifications in 2006. The Government have now devised a National Recruitment Model (NRM) to streamline and update the Police entrance procedures in England and Wales.
This model is being adopted by all forces. It basically consists of the five stage process outlined below:
Stage 1 - For English and Welsh police force applications you need to register your interest to join the police service by completing the “initial application form”. Copies are available on line by visiting the web site www.policecouldyou.co.uk/ click on the appropriate box at the bottom of the page (regular police officer or PCSO). This will then open a new window. Simply follow the on-screen instructions. Alternatively contact your local police force who will post you an application form.. For non-geographic police forces such as the British Transport Police, MOD or the Civil Nuclear Police visit www.police.uk/forces/nongeo.asp and again follow the instructions.
Stage 2 - Your application form is processed to make sure that you meet all the relevant criteria for the Police. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to the next stage - the assessment day at the forces assessment centre..
Stage 3 - The assessment day:
• Police Initial Recruitment Test (PIRT) academic test covering maths and English aspects.
• Police Fitness test
• Assessment of your suitability for the Police Service. This involves “role play” exercises and written exercises known as the “carousel”. This is followed by a structured interview looking at how your skills and abilities and thoughts match those of a 21st Century Police Service.
Stage 4 - Medical and drug screening - this will ensure you are medically fit enough to serve as a Police Officer.
If you successfully complete all 4 stages, you will then be offered a place as a Probationer.
Remember if you break the chain anywhere along the line your application will be rejected. Give yourself the best chance by enroling on our “PIRT Course”. Details can be found by clicking the link on the navigation bar above or click here.
